If you're planning a trip to see Wicked or any production taking place at the San Diego Civic Theater, I highly recommend making a day of it! Instead of rushing from one place to another, I took the opportunity to explore the city, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the experience before the show. Here’s how my magical day unfolded.
I kicked off my adventure at 1 PM and I was dropped off at the Midway Pier. The vibrant atmosphere of the waterfront was infectious, and I took my time strolling around the historic USS Midway Aircraft Carrier. It was here that I encountered the touching Embracing Peace statue, which depicts a sailor and a nurse caught in a kiss. It is a tribute to the brave souls of World War II. This enchanting piece is based on the iconic photograph taken in Times Square in 1945, and it made me pause and reflect on the resilience of generations past.
At 2 PM, I hopped on the flagship boat from Broadway Pier to Coronado. The scenic ride was a delightful way to take in the views of San Diego Bay. Once I arrived, I treated myself at Village Pizzeria to a mouthwatering Meathead pizza topped with pepperoni, spicy Italian sausage, meatballs, and Canadian bacon. I also indulged in crinkle-cut fries smothered in mozzarella, buffalo red sauce, crispy chicken, and blue cheese. To top it off, I sipped on a refreshing Coronado Brewing Company Orange Ave Wit...pure culinary bliss!
After my delicious meal, I enjoyed a leisurely walk along the Coronado shoreline, absorbing the coastal beauty and fresh sea breeze. I found a peaceful spot in a nearby park to relax and recharge for my next adventure. By 4:30 PM, it was time to head back to Broadway Pier on the boat, and once arriving I made a stop for a chai latte with oat milk at Portside Coffee. Their charming seating area overlooking the bay was the perfect place to savor my drink and soak in the stunning views.
As 6 PM approached, I made my way to the Civic Theater, just a quick 10-minute drive from Midway Pier. Arriving with time to spare, I found my seat, feeling the buzz of excitement in the air. As I settled in, memories flooded back, especially of my beloved grandmother, Betty Bowen. More than just a grandmother, she was a mentor who inspired my love for the performing arts. My first musical experience was right here at this theater when I was just four years old, watching The Wizard of Oz with her. Those early outings sparked a lifelong passion for theater, and I cherished every moment we spent together at the theater before she passed away in 1997. I also remember going to the movie theater in 2009 and watching the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz and was reminded of the metaphorical journey that life represents, much like the yellow brick road. Surrounding ourselves with good people can help us navigate the challenges we face, just as Dorothy did.

Reflecting on my life’s journey, I couldn’t help but think about the parallels between Wicked and my own experiences. I had attended the production for the first time with my mom in 2006, another guiding light in my life, and the magic of that performance still gives me goosebumps. While I recently saw the movie adaptation of Wicked, nothing compares to the thrill of witnessing it live. The energy and emotion that come from a live performance are simply unparalleled.

As the curtain rose and the music began, I felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me. The themes of friendship and growth resonated deeply, echoing the lessons I've learned from the people I love. The song "For Good" perfectly captures the essence of how relationships shape us, and I found myself singing along with gratitude for all those who have influenced my life: 🎶"Because I knew you, I have been changed for good."🎶
As I conclude my reflection, I hope your future destinations lead you to meaningful moments with loved ones who have positively impacted your life. Cherish those experiences, and allow them to inspire you as you navigate your own journey.
